Wild & Free Kids

About

Wild & Free Kids is a program rooted in curiosity, discovery, and play.

Kids are naturally self-directed learners; at Explora we give them the space, tools, time and support they need to learn through discovery. The Wild & Free Kids program has space for up to 6 kids ages 4-6 (*depending on readiness) and is supported by 1 creative facilitator.

We believe in mixed-age learning environments, free play and using the community as a classroom. Every morning you will find the Wild & Free kids following their curiosity and engaging with the natural world from their home base in La Punta.

We draw tools from a variety of recognized sources but ultimately we are an agile learning center supporting the Wild & Free Kids as they begin to direct their days based on specific interests. We have modified practices so that learners feel empowered and supported as they go through the cycle of learning each day: intention – creation – reflection – sharing.

DAILY RHYTHM

  • Morning Circle and Intention Setting
  • Free Play
  • Rotating Offerings including but not limited to…story telling, music, cooking, art, science, phonics/ reading and more
  • Outside Play
  • Closing Circle and Reflections

*** Members 4+ will go on excursions away from the center at least 2x’s per month.

Explora promotes independence and freedom in learners of all ages. In order to set learners up to be successful in a free and independent environment, there are certain things they must be able to do before enrolling to attend Explora.

Can your learner

  • Carry and take off backpack, coat, and shoes?
  • Keep personal items in their bin?
  • Stay safely with a group both in the park and while traveling through the neighborhood?
  • Respond to voice prompts (“Walking feet” or “Inside voices”)?
  • Use toilet and wash hands independently?
  • Listen to a children’s book read aloud and remain engaged until its conclusion?
  • Keep small objects out of mouth?
  • Return objects and materials to the original location when finished using them?

OUR COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY & EQUITY

As we grow, we try to balance accessibility with sustainability. We are always looking at our membership fee process to make sure we’re being responsible to our current families and to the future health of the program. We do everything possible to meet families where they are and supplement membership cost when supporting funds are available. By trusting families to be generous and reasonable we increase our accessibility and the diversity of our community center.

We try never to turn a family away based on finances. There is a space on the application for you to share details about your membership offer if you are unable to pay the full monthly fee.

LEARNING HAPPENS IN COMMUNITY

By enrolling your learner in a youth program, you are enrolling in a family membership and are committing to being a part of the Explora Agile Learning Community, where members of all ages (including parents & kids) chart their own learning path by exploring and sharing their unique passions, interests and curiosities. You understand that Explora is not a conventional school, but rather a learning center focused on the mission of building community through self-directed learning. Although parents are not required to participate at any minimum of hours, families must commit to exploring ways to engage with the community via parent meetings, workshops, offerings and other opportunities for connection and learning.
